Louis P. Berneman - Principal

Dr. Berneman has undertaken research, given expert testimony, written published articles, and been a frequent speaker on various topics in university licensing trends and best practices, intellectual asset management, technology transfer, negotiation, valuation and economic development. 

From 1995 to 2005, he was the Managing Director of the Center for Technology Transfer and the Intellectual Property Administrator at the University of Pennsylvania.  Under his leadership, Penn became one of the most productive university technology licensing offices in the world assessing ~ 3000 discoveries, filing ~ 1500 patent applications, entering into ~ 600 option/license agreements, launching ~ 80 new start-up ventures, generating more than $100M in license income and building a substantial license portfolio.

Dr Berneman is a Past President of the Association of University Technology Managers and is a former officer and director (trustee) of the Licensing Executives Society (U.S. & Canada) and the LES Foundation. 

Dr Berneman has founded technology based entrepreneurial ventures and served on the boards of companies and industry organizations including the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Association and the Greater Philadelphia Venture Group.

Dr Berneman holds Doctorate, Master of Education and Master of Arts degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University.  He has a teaching credential from UC Santa Barbara and a BA in history from The Pennsylvania State University.

 

Maureen O’Leary, PhD  - CTO and Director of Acquisitions 

Dr. O’Leary has over 10 years of experience in moving technologies from the laboratory to commercial environments. As Director of Start-Up Business Development at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Technology Transfer she helped launch 15 different start-up companies.  She has had experience in executive recruiting, market research, business plan development, grant writing, process simulation proofs-of-concept, licensing, prototype development, and private equity financing.  Dr. O’Leary has had primary responsibility for over 200 technology transfer agreements. 

She holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. from Wellesley College.
